You can browse the web for surf schools on the Big Island, however there are some of the best in Kona and Hilo. Kahalu’u Bay Surf and Sea provides board rentals and lessons for those who want to learn to surf or improve their skills, and is located close to Keauhuo, about five miles south of the Kona pier. The Hilo Surfboard Company rents surfboards in Hilo, but you can find many other providers by searching.
Honl’s Beach isn’t only a great place to surf, it’s also a great spot if you just want to enjoy a laid-back picnic with friends or family. Another great place to catch a wave is Kohanaiki Beach Park, where you’ll find surfers of all experience levels from beginner to advanced. Camping is another favorite pastime of locals who often refer to the beach as “Pine Trees.”
Kahalu’u Bay is another favorite of surfers regardless of skill level, with waves and surf breaks for the brand-new beginner to those who can’t remember a time they weren’t riding a surfboard. If you need to rent a board or need lessons before you plunge into a new adventure, you can find it all at Kahulu’u Surf and Sea, right across the street.
Seasoned surfers who crave excitement will likely find Banyans a favorite spot – and beginners will enjoy watching those who know how to surf. Just a few miles from downtown Kona, Banyans offers exceptional surfing during the summer months and is also a great spot for those who enjoy stand-up paddle boarding.
Lymans is between Kahaluu Beach Park and Magic Sands, also on the west shore of the island. This is another great spot for those of all skill levels, with winds that flow from the east and southeast.
These are just a few of some of the best places to surf on the Big Island, so you can see that it’s a great place to live if you love to surf! Just because we’re the youngest of the Hawaiian Islands doesn’t mean we don’t have lots of fun (and challenging) surfing spots.
